On Thanksgiving, President Barack Obama honored an American tradition by pardoning a turkey’s life. President Obama invited his daughters Sasha and Malia to join him for this sacred event. The pardon usually goes the same way every year; the president not only pardons the turkey but makes jokes, and President Obama even offered his daughters the chance to pet it. Malia responded by saying, “Nah.” Many critics claimed that girls acted very inappropriately at the pardon. However, the girls are just teenagers, and when Dad makes jokes like that, who cannot have that look on their face?

The girls also faced criticism for their outfits, despite being dressed appropriately. Malia wore a sweater, a plaid shirt, and tights, while Sasha wore a maroon dress and a cardigan. Elizabeth Lauten, the former communications director for a Republican state representative, has resigned after making controversial comments about the girls attitude and attire. Over a post on Facebook, Lauten said, “Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.”  Perhaps personal criticism of minors should be off-limits, especially if it is in relation to the president’s daughters.
