On February 13th, NASA’s Opportunity rover on mars passed away. Opportunity was originally only supposed to last for 90 days on planet Mars, but was able to survive for almost fifteen years. The rover landed on Mars on January 25, 2004 and has not responded to NASA since June 10, 2018. NASA believes this is because of a major dust stop that prevented Opportunity’s solar panels from soaring energy. Though the rover has not responded since June, it was officially pronounced dead in February. Some of Opportunity’s accomplishments include discovering the first meteorite on another planet, that Meridiani Planum was once immersed in water, and studying over 100 craters. Opportunity also traveled 28.06 miles and took 228,771 pictures of Mars. The rover is also known for singing happy birthday to itself and for taking a selfie on its 5,000th Martian day. Needless to say Opportunity made some amazing discoveries that helped us gain a better understanding of Mars. The Administrator of NASA, Jim Bridenstine, say “It is because of trailblazing missions such as Opportunity that there will come a day when our brave astronauts walk the service of Mars.” Opportunity won the hearts of space fans everywhere and will be greatly missed.
