Kentucky Derby Recap
On Saturday May 4, 2019, 20 horses took to the track for the 2019 Kentucky Derby, one of three races in which jockeys compete in an effort to win money, fame, and a name for themselves. Women in traditional bonnets, betters, gamblers, and derby fans around the world watched with bated breath as a gun was aimed at the sky, the stall doors opened—and they were off! The race lasted only two minutes, and the results are in. This year’s race has made its mark as one of the most controversial events in the derby’s history. Though Maximum Security, jockey Luis Saez, took the lead and crossed the finish line first, objections were made to the horse’s indirectly detrimental behavior towards Country House, who took second place. After much debate, Maximum Security was disqualified, making him the first to be taken from the race lineup because of an in-race infraction. Country House took the first-place spot and prize. So, who should have won? We may neigh-ver truly know.
