What is it about Romantic Comedies that keep attracting viewers? Why do some of these movies remain popular across generations? We decided to consider these questions and compile a list of the best movies of this genre. Happy watching!
- 10 Things I Hate About You
-
-
- Rounding out the number one spot is 10 Things I Hate About You (not by popular opinion, but by fact). A complex enemies to lovers based on “The Taming of the Shrew”, 10 Things I Hate About You is sweet, stubborn, and sincere and will have you calling it your comfort movie!
- “I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even a little bit. Not even at all.”
- Set It Up
- Clocking in at number two is a lesser known, but equally amazing romcom, Set it Up! Two assistants conspire to set up their unhappy bosses….but will they fall in love in the process? Find out in this laughter-filled, joyful movie starring Glen Powell (our fav) and Zoey Deutch. (Pete Davidson is in it too if that sways you)
- “You’re not hard to get at all, you’re hard to earn. And that’s so much better.”
-
- Clueless
-
-
- Earning the number three spot is this classic rom com starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd. Can you guess or are you clueless? (Haha) Clueless is about Cher, who thinks of herself as a matchmaker for everyone except herself…until she starts to fall for someone she never thought she’d fall for! This is another movie based on a classic novel, this one being Emma by Jane Austen.
- “It all boiled down to one inevitable conclusion, I was just totally clueless.”
-
- How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
-
-
- Coming in at number four is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (we really like the number 10 here)! This one features Andie Anderson the “How to” girl at Composure magazine and Ben Barry an advertising executive who each need the other for different reasons. Andie is trying to get Ben to break up with her while Ben is trying to get Andie to fall in love with him. This is a cutesy rom com with witty banter for days and two main characters that you will fall in love with.
- “You can’t lose something you never had.”
- 27 Dresses
- Do you like enemies to lovers trope? Then try out this amazing romcom about a girl who is always the bridesmaid (27 times) but never the bride. James Marsden stars as the nagging romance writer who is interested in her closet full of 27 dresses. But will they overcome the odds…and will she finally become the bride?
- “I cried like a baby at the Keller wedding.” (iykyk)
-
- She’s All That
-
-
- If you like prom queen politics, sarcastic main characters, and having one bet that could end it all, then you’ll love She’s All That. She’s All That is about a jock, Zach Siler, who bets he can turn the school socially awkward girl, Laney Boggs, into prom queen in six weeks to get back at his ex-girlfriend. What Zach didn’t plan on happening was that he would start to fall for this girl and that makes his job a little harder.
- “May I introduce the new and-not improved-but different, Laney Boggs.”
-
- Sixteen Candles
-
-
- This is an oldie, but we promise it’s a goodie. This high school romance follows Samantha on her 16th birthday as her entire family forgets it’s her birthday (I know, what a bummer). But will her day get better with the attention of the most popular boy in school, Jake Ryan pining over her? And will they put aside their differences and make a relationship work?
- Sleepless in Seattle
- In this heartwarming romcom, a widower man played by Tom Hanks is forced on a radio show by his 8 year old son, Jonah! Jonah’s goal is to find a new wife for his dad, and ultimately a stepmom for him (aww). Low and behold, a woman played by Meg Ryan hears this radio show and immediately falls for the man (because who wouldn’t, it’s Tom Hanks). She writes him a letter asking him to meet her on top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. But will he show up and live happily ever after…?
- “They knew it. Time, distance, nothing could separate them. Because they knew. It was right. It was real.”
-
- Notting Hill
-
-
- Do you love Hugh Grant? I mean honestly who doesn’t? In this romcom, he’s a bookshop owner and guess who wanders in one day? A famous celebrity played by Julia Roberts that’s who? Can a humble British bookstore owner and a famous American actress put aside their different lifestyles and make a relationship work? I guess you’ll have to watch the movie to find out!
- “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”
-
- 13 Going on 30
-
- And last but certainly not least, we have 13 going on 30 starring Jeniffer Garner as Jenna Rink and Mark Ruffalo as Matt Flamhaff. Jenna Rink is a 13 year old girl who, on her birthday, wishes to be “30, flirty, and thriving.” She wakes up the next morning in a New York City apartment in the body of her 30 year old self with no idea how she got there. Along the way she realizes that adult life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Her childhood best friend, Matt, realizes that his life isn’t what he wanted it to be and only Jenna can help him fix it.
- “I know I made a lot of mistakes, but I don’t regret making any of them.”
