Homework, sports practice, socializing, more homework: when does it end? Most teenagers find themselves constantly involved in activities, drowning in endless amounts of math problems, and barely finding time to spend with friends. Some people would say that teenagers have it easy and have all the time in the world, but do we? As a 15-year-old who works multiple jobs in the summer and works throughout the school year, and also plays sports, trust me when I say that being a teenager is far from “easy.”
I have been working since I was 13. My first job, working at a baseball field snack bar, definitely taught me how to deal with difficult customers. Dealing with these customers taught me how to be more patient with people. Fast forward two years, I am currently working for a catering company where I serve customers and make potato salad all day. I enjoy my job, and I’ve learned a lot of new skills. I have learned to be more connected with people, and more accountable with my responsibilities. However, it is challenging at times to balance sports practices and homework.
It’s not uncommon for me to be working on an essay during my lunch break, or darting out of practice so I won’t be late to my shift at work. However, through all of the challenges with time management, I’ve learned many valuable lessons. My biggest piece of advice for students struggling with time management is to use your time wisely. Whenever you have a chance to finish your essay, even if it’s during your lunch break, do it. If you ever find yourself being idle, take out your notebook and study. Every second counts when you’re in high school, especially as a Merion girl.
Even though balancing my activities and clubs while trying to maintain a high GPA has its challenges, I have learned to be more patient and be more on top of my responsibilities. I’ve become more independent and gained a strong work ethic that will help me succeed in the future. I’ve set goals for myself, including saving money to purchase a car. If there is one piece of advice I can give the reader, I will say to get a job in high school. It will be hard at times, but the lessons you gain through the hardships will allow you to succeed in life.
