Holiday Generosity 2018

November and December are the busiest, most exciting months of the year. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, midterms, and other various activities and celebrations, it is easy to get caught up in the chaos of our own lives. It is important to take time to remember the real reason for the season, realize how fortunate we are, and to give back to those in need. The Merion community is especially generous during the holiday season, and together we do everything we can to bring joy to as many families as possible.

Merion’s annual Thanksgiving food drive took place during early November. Each homeroom collected a variety of different foods to donate to Mercy Neighborhood Ministries so they could provide delicious Thanksgiving meals. Merion also gave back through the Christmas collection in early December. Community Service Corps coordinated this collection to provide opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to help less fortunate children and men at My Place Germantown. Each homeroom was assigned specific people to purchase gifts for to brighten up their holidays. Another fundraiser held at Merion was the fair trade sale, which is where jewelry, Christmas items, and candy are sold. All of the proceeds support artisans in developing countries.

It’s the perfect time of the year to reflect on our blessings and to use them to give back and improve the lives of the people around us. Merion provides many wonderful ways to get involved and be selfless. Community Service Corps member, Amanda Brown, stated, “It it such an awesome time of year to see the community giving back. My personal favorite part of the Christmas collection as a CSC member is when we get together to wrap the gifts. Experiencing the Merion holiday spirit being shared with those in need is so heartwarming!”
