Book Review: Ellie Kemper’s “My Squirrel Days”

Ellie Kemper, star of the Netflix comedy The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Erin on NBC’s The Office, published a memoir reflecting on her career so far. I do not often read books written by a celebrity; however, after receiving this book as a Christmas present, I decided to give at least this celebrity memoir a try since I am a fan of both shows. I am so glad I did! Ellie Kemper’s collection of essay tells stories about anything from hulking out after a brunch misunderstanding to being a SoulCycle warrior (which now that I write that I see those two topics have a lot in common). I loved her book!

Ellie has a great sense of humor, and it shone through each word I read.  I enjoyed hearing about the backstage happenings of two of my favorite shows, her experience as both an onscreen and offscreen bridesmaid, and her mishaps when meeting other celebrities. I related to her stories about putting on plays for her family and neighbors. I did that and, like Ellie, often took it to the extremes. After reading Ellie Kemper’s memoir, I feel inspired to actually finish reading Bossypants.
