Met Gala 2019

Met+Gala+2019

The Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art chiefly run by Anna Wintour, the artistic director for Condé Nast. The theme of the Met Gala this year was Camp: Notes on Fashion, based on the 1964 essay by Susan Sontag. Camp is an elusive concept which thrives on its lack of definition. Largely associated with LGBTQ history, camp focuses on the over the top, the flamboyant, the fun, and the joyous. The co-hosts included the queen of camp Lady Gaga, the flamboyant pop culture icon Harry Styles, the creative director of Gucci Alessandro Michele, and Serena Williams. While many celebrities embraced the concept wholeheartedly (see: Billy Porter, Lady Gaga, Ezra Miller), others unfortunately shied away (see: Hailey Baldwin, Richard Madden, Karlie Kloss). Some guests focused more on the gender fluidity of camp such as Harry Styles and Michael Urie. Overall, many rose to the occasion. If you are interested in seeing the Camp: Notes on Fashion exhibit, it opens to the public on May 7th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
